Summary
BSASM¢â is a multi-herbal preparation
that is composed of several plant extracts such as Rosemarinus
officinalis, Matricaria recubita, Camellia sinensis,
Glycyrrhiza glabra, Polygonum cuspidatum, Scutellaria
baicalensis , and Centella asiatica .It
has multiple functions such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,
and immunomodulatory effects . It can be introduced
as a main ingredient in cosmeceuticals for skin diseases;
acne, atopic dermatitis, seborrhea,
or psoriasis. It induces no adverse effects such
as eczema, pruritus, redness and so on when applied
to human skin. It is an optimum synergistic combination
of botanical fractions of the following herbs.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common
chronic inflammatory skin disease, occurring most commonly
during early infancy and childhood, characterized by
a chronically relapsing course. Although the pathogenesis
of AD is not fully understood, it has been reported
that AD is associated with multiple immunologic abnormalities.
The most prominent findings of immune dysfunction are
the high level of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in peripheral
blood and increased IgE production by B cells. In AD,
Th2 cells are mainly activated and then secret IL-4,
IL-5 and IL-10.
Symptoms of AD induced by these signal
transduction pathway mostly accompany inflamed skin
damage as well as skin dryness. Accordingly, the generally
accepted prescription includes moisturizers and topical
steroids that maintain a level of moisture in the skin
and suppress inflammatory reaction, respectively. However,
when topically treated for a long time, steroid hormone
has been known to induce adverse side effects. In addition,
cyclosporin A and FK506 which are used as a non-steroid
therapeutic agent have been reported to induce cutaneous
T cell lymphoma, fever, extreme rises in serum alkaline
phosphatase in children, enhanced irritation and relapsing
Kaposi's varicelliform eruption and so on.
Therefore, at present, many researches are actively
trying to develop therapeutic agents which have high
anti-inflammatory effect with the least side effects.
To this end, as a first step, we selected chemicals
which were known to be involved in anti-inflammatory
and antioxidant mechanisms and then using these chemicals,
we prepared a variety of formulations. Subsequently,
we screened candidate formulation which has high anti-inflammatory
effect using an NF-kB luciferase reporter. In the course
of this screening, we obtained BSASM preparation, a
mixture of 7 herbal extracts.
